About the Kollel > Overview

The Kollel’s Standards
One of the ways that the Ohel Ya'akov Community Kollel measures its success is by its attendance. The fact that we are able to reach out to over 6,000 Jews in the Metro Vancouver area annually, and that a very large majority of our visitors are otherwise unaffiliated Jews, proves our ongoing success. The Kollel has standards by which it exists and, as a result, has been continually growing over the last 9 years.

Our standards
1. Filling many niches
We believe that an organization works best when it looks to fill a need not yet filled by other organizations. We aim not to compete.
2. A Gateway
We view the Kollel as a gateway into the Jewish community. It is a comfortable environment where our guests can begin to get involved with fellow Jews. Many people, after some time, move on to other synagogues in the community. When they stay connected, we believe we’ve succeeded.
3. Connecting
Our main two goals are to connect Jews to Jews and Jews to their heritage. Every single program is based on these two principles. And, of course, one of the Kollel’s greatest successes is that more than 30 couples have met at our events and become either engaged or married within the last five years.
4. Comfort
We know that the only way for someone to feel comfortable is if they know someone truly cares about them. The most energy expended at the Kollel is put towards making sure that everyone knows they’ll be warmly welcomed and are truly cared for.
5. Everyone is welcome
Kollel is the Hebrew word for inclusion. Almost all programs are free of charge and no one is ever made to feel uncomfortable in any way if they lack funds. This is in order to insure that all members of the community should feel welcome at the Kollel.

Our programs
We achieve our goals through enjoyable, comfortable and meaningful programs. As the Kollel continues to grow, we need your help to continue our work. Please consider becoming a sponsor of our programs.
